This 368-page artist's book presents a collaboration between the young Brussels-based artist Hans Op de Beeck and authors Nicolas de Oliveira and Nicola Oxley. It collects artworks from the last 10 years alongside texts that generate from questions posed by literary figures like Jorge Luis Borges, Italo Calvino, Georges Perec and Alain Robbe-Grillet.

Installation is arguably the most original vigorous and fertile form of art today. No large-scale survey or festival of contemporary art would be complete without examples of installations, and it is these that usually attract the greatest attention and cause the most controversy. Yet this is the first book ever to describe the tradition and explore the achievements and ambitions of the installation artist.Michael Archer's illuminating introduction traces the history of installations art from Duchamp's first readymade through the Pop tableaux of Kienholz, Oldenburg, Kapoor and Dine to more recent developments such as Land Art and Process Art. This is followed by a global range of installations presented and documented by Nicolas de Oliveira, Nicola Oxley and Michael Petry. All these works share a theatrical power and an insistence that the viewer be involved, from Christian Marclay's floor carpeted with LPs and Jenny Holzer's pulsating LED screens with their enigmatic messages, to Lothar Baumgarten's haunting memorial to Native American tribes and Hiroshi Teshigahara's tranquil tunnels of bamboo. The pieces are grouped into four sections, with more than 260 illustrations. Authoritative reference material includes a chronology which details the history of installation from its roots in the late nineteenth century to today and an extensive bibliography. Installation is a rich art form, often heroic in scale, sometimes with and subversive, usually impermanent. This pioneering volume captures fully the variety and scale of these many-layered works - the essential contemporary record of a vibrant, fast-changing discipline. This artist's book id the culmination of Hans Op de Beeck's long-term project 'Sea of Tranquillity'. The publication includes film stills, texts, sculptures, watercolours and even a soundtrack (sung by Sandrine). In his familiar pictorial style mildly surreal and resolutely critical the artist confronts us with a large-scale but fictional luxury cruise-ship. This artificial city symbolizes a postmodern society in which extreme luxury is accompanied by a moral vacuum. On board we do not only meet Eros and Thanatos, but also boredom, miscommunication and a hierarchical crew.

The Cliff, which is the title of both the piece and the exhibition, is a romantic naturescape in the form of a life-sized sculptural installation. Art and everyday life blur into one another; real-looking persons and objects mutate into sculptures in their monochromy. Life seems halted, frozen like in Pompeiian cement. For the artist, this is not at all about a hyperrealist imitation of reality but about an own interpretation in a process-based creative manifestation of the sculptural work. At night, Op de Beeck, painter and draftsman, delves into the world of watercolors and ink painting, whose wet washes steep the precise matter-of-factness into an atmosphere of painterly lyricism. Sometimes the sheets function as frames for film projects--like for his nocturnal animation film "Night Time", which is presented in the exhibition together with a selection of other films. Among them, there also is "Staging Silence (2)", in which bodiless hands appear on film creating imaginative settings on a stage using everyday objects like plastic bottles or lumps of sugar. A surreal journey of the wondrously melancholic world of Hans Op de Beeck
